The week before finals passes in a haze of Sean, studying, too little sleep, and too many emails from Jeremy. New plans. New identities. New travel itineraries. Langdon’s emails have changed everything, and for once my father and I are in agreement. New Hampshire is out of the question. Too little, too late. If we act quickly and move on D.C., Dad’s plans will position me to put Cranston down like the human dog he is, before he can do irreversible damage.

We’re cutting it close to the wire, and I’m running out of time. I have trouble caring. Sunday morning, it’s all I can do to drag myself out of Sean’s bed and trudge home. I have Samadhi to take care of, and I don’t want Sean to catch me dealing with my father’s business.

When I step into my building, I know immediately that something’s wrong. It’s a current on the air, a sense of things displaced, that same perception that tells you a stranger’s been in your home after a break-in. On my floor, I slip from the staircase into the hall, hand drifting toward the knife I keep in my jacket.

A man stands before my apartment door, his back to me. As he turns, my body goes numb. Breakfast turns heavy in my stomach; for a moment my vision swims, and I can barely speak the single dry, crumbling word on my lips.

“…Dad?”
